NEVA Ladies 2008 Round 1 - 18th Oct - Dear all, thanks for a good day again. I worked out there were approximately 100 women and girls playing yesterday. A long way since we started about 5 or 6 years ago and sometimes had 12 - 20! At the last Tees Valley meeting I did question the need for the tournaments as we now have the ladies league but it is always a good day and great to see so many there. The next round is Nov 29th same place same times. To further encourage new and less experienced players there will only be one national league player allowed on court at any time.

Triumph for Middlesbrough College National League Teams

Congratulations to Middlesbrough College for a successful first year in National League Division 3. The ladies team won their division losing only one match all season and are promoted to Div 2. The Men's 1st team are also promoted to Div 2 having not lost a match and dropping only 2 sets all season (could this be a National League record?). The Men's second team finished runners-up and are now in the play-offs for the second promotion place. We should all wish them good luck. I would like to thank all the people responsible for their help this season, Coaches Dave Goodchild, Keith Sowden, M Chapman and Martin Wain. I would also like to thank all the people who came to home matches to helped with scoring, lines and most of all those who came to support. I would like to think that we could have the same amount of support next year when we embark on our assault on both Mens and Womens Division 2. Mick Welsh

Tees Valley National League Team

A worthy 7th place was achieved by the newly formed Tees Valley NL women's team. The new team captained by Nikki Attah and consisting of many young players entered the NL with the intent of developing the players and the team and hopefully winning a few sets and possibly the odd match on the way. The 7th place and seven wins on the way far exceeded expectations. The result did not even truly reflect the potential of the team as several matches were lost by quite a small margin and could easily have gone in Tees Valley's favour. A great performance by the team and we look forward to next season. A big thank-you to coaches Jackson Sweeting and Dave McManus. Colin Gordon

Nunthorpe Eagles - Awards for All, June 2007

As a leading club within the North of England Volleyball Association, NUNTHORPE EAGLES has been successful in receiving an AWARDS FOR ALL grant of £4622 from the National Lottery to develop the sport of volleyball. Any sports club will not survive without a regular input of young potential players to feed into their teams. Whilst our overall aim is to attract such players to the club and develop their skills, we also wish to see the sport developed in the wider sense.

We are initially targeting some 20 primary schools in a fairly local area. Of the schools that come into the scheme, 10 will receive a supply of suitable volleyballs, a training net, and a set of Volleysport teaching cards. Whilst we will only be able to fully support 10 schools, the other schools will still receive coaching support and teaching cards should be available for all the schools. Our proposal is to offer short update/workshop sessions for school staff as soon as possible. This will enable them to introduce the sport to specific year group(s) over a period of 6 to 8 weeks, or of course longer. All staff can attend these sessions, whether or not their school is fully supported. We are aware that sports hall/area facilities at primary schools can be poor. The sport can however be introduced in what many may consider to be less than ideal conditions. There would be access to a volleyball coach during the periods that the sport was being delivered during school time. All schools would receive a visit prior to proposed delivery.

The aim would be to get pupils playing 3 a side volleyball, the necessary skill levels being commensurate with their age and ability. It is anticipated that the delivery would be in the pre Xmas 2007 period. In the early part of the following year a tournament would be held at NUNTHORPE School, to which schools could send a number of teams. It is worth saying that there is no direct financial cost for any of the above provisions. Any equipment or coaching input will be totally free to participating schools, funded through our award. A major advantage of the sport is that it is non contact and mixed ability boys and girls can take part. Ian Berry

2006/7 Season

Another good year for the TVVA Clubs and Teams. The season started well with three girls from Nunthorpe VBC winning the England Beach Volleyball Invitational U14 girls Tournament in Brighton.

The TVVA leagues saw 86% of the fixtures completed and reported.

In the National Leagues, Haughton completed a season in Mens Division 2 but unfortunately were relegated. However, Middlesbrough Maverick (M3N) and Middlesbrough College (W3N) finished 3rd and 2nd respectively, both teams narrowly missing promotion opportunities.

In the Nationals at Worcester, U15 boys from Acklam were equal 5th while the U15 girls from Nunthorpe were semi-finalists. At the U16 Nationals in Loughborough the Nunthorpe girls were semi-finalists and the Tees Valley boys got into the last 8 at Keele University.

At the Inter-Regionals the North East faired well. The U15 boys were 6th of 8 and the U17 boys 5th of 8. The U16 girls were 4th of 8 and the U14 girls were first of 7 with three of the girls obtaining Super 6 awards.

As we head towards the next season a number of North East U16 girls attended an England Cadets selection training session held in Manchester and the news to-date is that two Nunthorpe girls have been selected to train with the England Cadets for the UK School Games at Coventry at the end of August.

Last but not least, a NL Division 3 ladies team is to be formed that will play as a Tees Valley team.

14-May-2007 - TVVA League Season end - The season has now officially ended and no further results will be recorded. The closing league points and positions will be confirmed at the next TVVA meeting this month. Thanks to everyone who has taken part. Colin Gordon, Fixtures Secretary.
